Reading Galatians with Charles Spurgeon

Day 13

Today we finish this series with the point of it all: becoming a new creation

Devotional Point 4 today: Paul might have taken an eminent position…

Scripture 4 today: “Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is the new creation.” ‭‭Galatians‬ ‭6:15‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Reflection 4 today: interestingly circumcision was the foundation of the Jewish faith at that time. The reality of circumcision is that it is a “modification “of the old creation. Jesus came to give us a new life by giving us the opportunity to become a “new creation“. This is generally where Satan distracts and diverts Christians. If he can make you think some specific activity would “add“ to your Christianity so it must be okay right? No, dead wrong, we are here to become new creations, pure and simple…

Starting tomorrow: hope you have enjoyed this tour through Galatians with Charles Spurgeon. Tomorrow we will start a short devotional called  “Better That You Can Imagine”, I’m sure you will find some deep truth in this one…

Day 12

Today we look at the secret to church growth, bearing burdens…

Devotional Point 4 today: We who are joyous might often lend some of our sunbeams to those who are in the dark

Scripture 4 today: “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” ‭‭Galatians‬ ‭6:2‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Reflection 4 today: I really do like Surgeon’s “lending in our sunbeams“ idea. Almost every person we meet today is going to be in the dark over something. And one thing we know about dark is that it is a very big burden.  So, to actually provide actual help to someone with a burden we have to start by understanding what the burden is and why it is a burden. Then we need to organise the help required for this task. And then we need to participate in the “burden lifting“. Assuming we can help, two things are required: first we have to be good listeners and second we have to be willing to take the time…

Day 11

Devotional Point 4 today: Believers are not dependent on circumstances.

Scripture 4 today: “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” ‭‭Galatians‬ ‭5:25‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Reflection 4 today: This is a very interesting verse because it expresses the important part of the relationship between us and the Holy Spirit. Clearly the Holy Spirit has a plan for each of us and we need to make the decisions make the changes make the possibility to be “in step” with what he is already doing. He already has a plan and a mission, He is not walking around thinking about what to do and what we need next. What we need to do is get in step with that…

Day 10

Today we see that the faith that saved us is the faith we need to continue on, nothing else…

Devotional Point 4 today: The only thing which can save us is faith in Jesus Christ…

Scripture 4 today: “For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.” ‭‭Galatians‬ ‭5:6‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Reflection 4 today: Sometimes there is way too much focus on the “saving” process. Purely and simply it comes by faith and from faith. The Judaizers, seeking to distract and derail these early Christians, said, yes that faith was a good start, but we have to have a whole list of “other things” that need to be added to it… So Paul just says, no thinks to all of it, and brings us back to the faith that got us here…

Day 9

Today we see the result of destruction by distraction…

Devotional Point 4 today: There cannot be a greater difference in the world between two things than there is between law and grace.

Scripture 4 today: “But now that you know God—or rather are known by God—how is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable forces? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again?” ‭‭Galatians‬ ‭4:9‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Reflection 4 today: These guys from Galatian had been pagan idol worshippers their whole lives. So they convert to Christianity and then they get convinced by the Judaisers the their form of Christianity is just the much better than what they have experienced so far. It is quite possible that most of them really didn’t understand what they were doing and the ramifications of it. Satan’s goal for them and us is the same, destruction by distraction, and important reason for community…

Day 8

Today we get the great news that we are His sons and daughters, and His spirit is alive in us…

Devotional Point 4 today: the Holy Spirit has come to dwell in us…

Scripture 4 today: “Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.” ‭‭Galatians‬ ‭4:6-7‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Reflection 4 today: this is an interesting concept about the Holy Spirit saying “ABBA Father“. It is a phrase of both endearment in command, it’s like saying “hey dad”… And what do I need that for? Every address was made to guard house to start out with “our father“. Why? Well, it makes sense really because that puts us in a position of asking of the father things that he already wants us to have. More than anything, who wants to have a deep every personal relationship with us, how awesome is that?

Day 7

Today shows us that the blessing of the cross is that it paved the way for the life we now have…

Devotional Point 4 today: The blessing, which is the soul of Abraham’s gospel, must come to us in the same way as it did to him, namely by faith…

Scripture 4 today: “He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.” ‭‭Galatians‬ ‭3:14‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Reflection 4 today: Real faith is not something we actually talk about today, because it is so hard to come by. We have this in-built need to explain and justify everything that both happens to us and in the world we live in… The more we know the true explanation for how things work, the less faith we need to have. So, we have to understand what is explainable and what is not, and where it is not, that is where faith will make life with Him work…

Day 6

Today gives us truth we can trust and lean on…

Devotional Point 4 today: As a sinner I trust the sinner’s substitute.

Scripture 4 today: “So those who rely on faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.” ‭‭Galatians‬ ‭3:9‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Reflection 4 today: The real blessing that Abraham experienced was the blessing of the day-to-day walk with God. Life is hard, it is hard every day. The “hardness“ of life was just as president then as it is now. For the last 100 years the church has put a big focus and emphasis and premium on the conversion process as “the good news“. But the real good news is that day-to-day work of the work with the Holy Spirit by our side.

Day 5

Day 5 brings us back to where it all started, with the Holy Spirit…

Devotional Point 4 today: Sanctification does not come to us from self-reliance but as a work of the Spirit received by faith in Christ.

Scripture 4 today: “I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by believing what you heard?” ‭‭Galatians‬ ‭3:2‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Reflection 4 today: no one becomes a Christian outside of the prompting of the Holy Spirit. It does not happen by any sort of inductive or deductive reasoning. Yet for some reason, after experiencing a little bit of the Christian life, so many people then try to approach spiritual growth by both inductive and deductive reasoning. Spiritual growth only happens through the prompting of and believing in the work of the Holy Spirit. We just need to learn how to listen and believe…

Day 4

Day 4 gives us one of the most important verses in the New Testament…

Devotional Point 4 today: He is thinking of that special love, that Grace which had come to him…

Scripture 4 today: “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” ‭‭Galatians‬ ‭2:20‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Reflection 4 today: this verse is something we almost need to remind ourselves of daily and then several times during the day. Everything that we are doing today we are to live through faith in God for every single little step of the day. There is no line of demarcation between my work and God.s work in my life today. The more we grow in our walk with Christ, the more of the line disappears. it is quite a tangible line and the more we see it and know it the more we will be aware of its disappearance.

Day 3

Day 3 is the story of one of the biggest internal “showdowns” in the early church, the conclusion will surprise you…

Devotional Point 4 today: We draw no support for grace from our circumstances whether they are good or evil.

Scripture 4 today: “All they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor, the very thing I had been eager to do all along.” Galatians 2:10 NIV

Reflection 4 today: The first century church was pretty much like all the others going forward, lots of politics in a lot of jockeying for position. Some pretty strong people in the mix demanded that everyone be circumcised and convert to being Jews. However after 14 years at this, Paul goes up to Jerusalem and has a major neeting with the remaining original apostles. What time is it is it is that they agree with everything has put forward about grace, only asking him to remember the poor…

Day 2

Day 2 gives us great insight into the foundation of all we live for, the work of Jesus and the Holy Spirit…

Devotional Point 4 today: God had had thoughts of mercy toward him from his birth…

Scripture 4 today: “I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that the gospel I preached is not of human origin.” Galatians 1:11 NIV

Reflection 4 today: The Galatians seem to have a lot in common with the church in the West today. Paul basically makes the point that if Christianity could have been arrived at deductively, he would have done it. But that clearly was not the case, neither him or any man born since. All parts of this Christianity that we now live are from above, from the work of Jesus and now the work of the Holy Spirit shaping us, it is all from above…

Day 1

Day 1 of this new series starts with the foundation, the gospel stands on its own and doesn’t need any help of modification…

Devotional Point 4 today: God’s great objective with regard to his people is to deliver them from this present evil age

Scripture 4 today: “I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—” ‭‭Galatians‬ ‭1:6‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Reflection 4 today: Paul dispenses with the normal cordialities and gets right to the point. Bizarrely enough, very little has changed in two thousand years. For the last 100 years The church in the west has been “adding“ little things to make the church supposedly more in line with the gospel. What did has built is in institution that has very little to do with the gospel, a big business yes but the gospel? The gospel does not need any help or modification, it stands just fine on its own.
