Christian Dave

The Story…

I had grown up in an around Church on the East Coast of the US, and I can’t remember why or how, but I saw a guy named Billy Graham at Madison Square Garden in New York in January of 1971, and I wanted to give my life to Christ that night, but was afraid to, because all I knew about Christians is how they all just had this long list of things you couldn’t do….

A month later I was on a trip behind the iron curtain, and had to fly to Istanbul Turkey to get there, that was the only way to connect then, and it was in the middle of the Vietnam War. We had to fly first to London and then Frankfurt Germany. The week before I had suffered an ice hockey accident, where I took a broken stick into my stomach, got it sorted and then didn’t think much more about it. I did not know that I had developed a strangulated hernia. It broke apart between Frankfurt and Istanbul, just as we were coming into land. I went immediately unconscious and into shock with the pain, bled from every opening in my body. Got taken to a big hospital there and pumped with morphine, they had a pretty abundant supply there… They decided to operate right there but did not know what the problem was, only found out when they opened me up. Before I was opened up, I laid on the slab in the operating theatre and decided that this was a good time to give my life to Christ, as it seemed certainly possible that I wouldn’t wake up and there wouldn’t be any more life…

So, I did wake up, but not for 10 days, was in a deep coma. When I came to my mother was there, they would not let my father into the country, they were less than friendly with the US at the time (some things haven’t changed). I stayed there for 3 weeks, and then got moved to the American Embassy complex in Istanbul, as they were having a revolution at the time, and the hospital was getting shelled. I was unquestionably saved by a miracle of God there, so decided I should pursue this “Christian” thing I’d heard Billy Graham talk about. I had to be flown to the Rhein-Main Airforce Base in Germany, and checked out and sorted out at the big American hospital there. After several days there I was flown back to NY, and then ambulanced to a big hospital right outside Philadelphia.

One of the consequences of the drama is that the hospital ran out of blood, and I was given a healthy dose of blood infected with hepatitis B and C. So, 90 days after arriving back in the US, I turned bright yellow. I had also started immediately going to a Methodist Church and met a very nice girl named Janet. And when I was taken back into the hospital with hep B&C, who should be one of the nursing students there, but this lovely girl name Janet… So, I got nursed back to recovery and decided to follow Jesus from then on. However, the story took quite a few twists and turn to get to where we are today… But that is a story for another day…

How I got to Life.Church

in 2009, right after the London Hillsong Conference, there was one of the guys speaking at our Surrey Campus, named Craig Groeschel. It was only 300 poeple then, so I went down afterwards and chatted with him… He talked about the YouVersion, and I downloaded it right there on to my Blackberry. The rest is also a pretty long story with a lot of twists and turns, but when you look at my profile on YouVersion you can see that I started in 2009…

My 3 current commitments:

Life.Church

This is really the first of its kind, as it broadcasts and re-broadcasts its services over 90 times a week on the net. To check it out, click here…  On each service there is the opportunity for people to chat with each other and with the hosts regarding the content of the sermons and messages of the week… I am a Host Team Leader on one of them. We reach out to people all over the world. The church is headquartered in the US state of Oklahoma, with over 30 campuses in various places around the USA.

Life.Church has an important product: the YouVersion Bible App, I am also a beta tester for the app and its new features and its future releases. particularly important is the “reading plans” section. Probably at the root of some of the biggest problems in Western Christianity is the fact that Christians don’t actually read the Bible very often. This app makes it possible…  If you have any sort of mobile device, it needs to be on it.  Don’t have it? You need get it, click here

Hillsong

There isn’t much to say about Hillsong other than it is just Hillsong. We are at Hillsong London, at their Guildford campus. Involved with a bunch of different things there: prayer & praise, tech/app development, and social justice…

Our Lady Queen of Heaven

Our local parish church in Frimley with a big reach into the local community. It provides a great deal of education, feeds the hungry, clothes the poor, and is a major source of hope and reconciliation in the community. It is across the street from one of the largest hospitals in the UK, Frimley Park, and acts a major source of support for the hospital and its patients…

Not too involved anymore, but has been a great part of the last 20 years…

Discipling101.com

I have worked with my friend Ben Davies to build out a site with the basics of Christian discipleship, use it and be blessed….

Click here, and it will take you to www.discipling101.com.
